Tyler Caswell is the Open Streets Manager at the Arusha Centre and is very passionate about sustainability and active transportation. He has a BA in Urban Geography from the University of Victoria and a Masters of Planning from the University of Calgary. Shortly after moving to Calgary he found work at the Arusha Centre and was immediately connected with several great like-minded people that are looking to make Calgary a better place. Since joining the Arusha Centre, he has been part of Open Streets Events, which is a program that provides Calgarians with environmental/energy awareness and education, but also advocates on active transportation and a sustainable urban core.

Nathan Gignac is the executive director of the Calgary Tool Library, and has been running the operation for nearly five years. Before taking over the organization, he honed his abilities as a human resources and management expert, with a strong emphasis on social and economic justice. Today, with the support of a dedicated volunteer community, Nathan works with his allies to create a kinder and more just future.

Energy Depot Team

Adeniyi Adeaga currently works for the Federation of Calgary Communities as the Energy Manager, with a focus on helping non-profit community associations to save money by designing and implementing low-cost and no-cost measures to become efficient in energy and water utilization. He has conducted numerous energy audit (ASHRAE Level II) of commercial and public facilities. Adeniyi is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensed by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).


Tyson Bankert sees the value of community and connection, in almost everything he tries to do. Whether it’s a co-facilitator of the Energy Depot, volunteering in the youth sector or his entrepreneurship endeavours, for Tyson it all comes down to building and then sustaining healthy relationships. Tyson continues and enjoys working in the non-profit sector. Ultimately when it comes to work, Tyson promotes equitable work spaces, a life then work balance lifestyle and leading body breaks, a chance to keep people active at work. Tyson is the creator of Recess Calgary a business that uses play and fitness to build community.

Mike Byerley works to build leadership and community capacity for actions directed towards climate and social justice. He has a graduate degree in Earth Science, and comes from a background that started in research and ending up in oil and gas. After switching careers 15 years ago Mike worked as senior staff at Mountain Equipment Coop before launching the Next Up Youth Leadership program in Calgary. He currently is the Director of Programming for the Regeneration Society, which in addition to offering the Energy Depot, runs the Climate Leadership Program. Mike’s profession interests include facilitation, cooperatives, renewable energy, food security and waste / energy efficiency and reduction.  Mike was the Chair of the Alberta Renewable Energy Cooperative, which recently merged with Alberta Cooperative Energy. When he’s not at his day job(s) he can be found enthusiastically biking, gardening and fermenting. As a treaty person he strives daily for reconciliation with the indigenous people who share this land.

Alana-Dawn Eirikson has worked and volunteered in the community development and environmental sustainability field for 10 years. She is an alumni of the Next Up Climate Leadership Program, and has a Master’s degree community development social work. Alana-Dawn has extensive experience in co- leading collaborative projects/programs, proposal and grant writing, building relationships and partnerships, and creative community engagement. She is excited to learn about your awesome ideas and how we can support it!

Karen Jiang is passionate about policy and governance. She has worked in the public sector for the past 15 years. One day she hopes to build a net zero passive home build in Calgary. In the meantime she is working to support her community of Tuxedo Park, where she is in the process of founding the Association's sustainability committee.
